Can You Treat Bipolar Disorder?

Bipolar disorder is a mental illness that afflicts you such that your moods could swing extremely rapidly between extreme mania and deep depression. Amongst a host of other things, it makes it difficult for you to relate with people around you, and vice versa. I mean, picture just how bad things would be if people could never deal rightly with you because one moment you are ecstatic, and the next you’re blue. Bipolar disorder causes you to be extremely happy and extremely sad at alternating times, and you might never be even aware of it. When you are unhappy, you often feel intensely sad and indifferent to work, activities, and people. When you are happy, you are utterly ecstatic, enough for people around you to wonder if there is anything the matter. The thing is that there is a matter, but you don't know it, and neither do they.

Some professionals like to refer to bipolar disorder as a manic-depressive illness, implying the characteristic mood swings that depict the ailment. The manic portion is the part where you are extremely and intensely elated, feeling all self-important, energetic, and irritable. Funny thing is there might not be anything to be excited about. And then in a strange twist of events, you then switch to the depressive part of the syndrome; all of a sudden, you experience painful sadness, starting to think all negative and indifferent, and also apparently for no just cause. Picture that spectacle – not a pleasant one, you will agree. The depressive state of bipolar disorder causes you to not only think slowly, but also to concentrate poorly on whatever, whilst feeling tired and experiencing changes in your sleep patterns and your appetite. In addition, during this state of the disorder, you would also tend to feel a sense of worthlessness or helplessness. At this point you are probably no longer in control of your actions anymore, and if care is not taken, you could end up committing suicide.

Perhaps four out of every twenty five folks all over the world get seriously depressed at some point in their lives. Although it is only to be expected that your emotions – even the negative ones – get to overflow every once in a while, letting it get as out of hand as bipolar disorder is a whole new thing, and one that you should learn to live without. Bipolar disorder causes people to think irrationally, and behave in socially inappropriate ways. In this state of mind, there is no way you are not having impaired judgment of instances and issues. Sometimes you are excited enough to take airplane trips all over the country, and at other times you could feel so down you’d decide to just be mean to someone you care about.

Major depression is the worst type of depression that there is, and it seems to have more than just depression as common ground with bipolar disorder. You see, bipolar disorder has a rather high mortality rate: almost two in every ten cases end up committing suicide. This roughly equals the same instance with cases from major depression. I once saw a fellow make some indecent sexual advances at a lady, and strangely she seemed to fall for it. Then suddenly, as though in a dream, he turned on her and upon himself, berating them both about being unable to do anything about the crumbling world economy. World economy! I mean, where did this guy come from? I hated eavesdropping on their little romantic banter, but by reason of having a shrink as a friend, I knew that this was bipolar disorder in action.
